Actually making villages

You can now walk about a random village!

Huts, clay pots and the roofs of the huts are all basically shown as they are in the screenshot here. The pots could have stuff in them (looting of items is already implemented) though certainly I wouldn't expect everyone to search through every container they find. Also I will have to make it so you can smash the pots. Luckily there's no law & order in villages so you can totally be a jerk to everyone and nobody can stop you.

Not pictured are the denizens of this settlement. For the moment all they do is stand around or occasionally move and live generally empty little lives. Soon though I will start making intelligent life forms capable of giving quests (or mugging you). I'm thinking the quests can mostly just be of the form "fetch me artifact XY" and then you have to find it following their directions on your map, if they have any. The artifact might have value to the player as well though, so the player has to decide whether they'd like to keep the item or trade it in for the quest-giver's reward. Sometimes perhaps the quest-giver is being devious though...

Shops are another thing I'd like to add soon. Though implementing these will be complex, since they need some way of discouraging you from stealing stuff. I wouldn't be satisfied if you trade via some interface with the shopkeeper but the items just disappear if you murder them. NetHack is the only other game I can think of where the items actually exist independently of the shop (although I imagine Dwarf Fortress does the same).

Not sure what I'll do next. Quests, shops and dangerous monsters (with AI) are the highest priority things right now. Soon after that can add some sort of "skill point" system and then finally I might have a game!
